12 Jul 10 PRESS RELEASE 15th July, 2010: Green Bicycle targets community groups for environmental conservation Launched in partnership with Trocaire in Ishiara Embu The Green Bicycle Project since its inception in 2009, has enabled students in rural areas, who walk long distances to school, to access school with ease and on time. Over fifty schools have benefited from the project. This year, however the Green Bicycle Project in addition to distributing bicycles to schools will be targeting community groups and religious institutions. Green Africa Foundation in partnership with Trocaire will distribute 140 bicycles to schools and community groups in Meru and Embu District. This initiative will be launched at Ishiara Embu, where Trocaire has been undertaking projects in the area to improve livelihoods and enable communities adapt to climate change. Ishiara location is an arid region that suffers from constant drought and this has affected agricultural productivity and increased poverty levels. Green Africa Foundation and Trocaire will be working with community groups in environmental projects that aim at reforesting the region and introducing environmentally friendly income generating activities. The main aim of the Green Bicycle Project is to enhance environmental conservation, raise awareness and imprint environmental consciousness in communities. Each recipient of the bicycle is required to grow trees in their respective institutions and replicate the same in their home and neighborhood. Green Africa Foundation is the first recipient in Africa to receive bicycle donations from Japan Bicycle Parking Facility Foundation. This is a five year project that aims at distributing 2000 bicycles in Kenya. The Japanese Embassy in Kenya has been a key supporter of the project and has facilitated Japanese investors to investment opportunities in Kenya.
